Social Responsibility

Explore Beyond is a Global Encounters Business Unit that puts emphasis on responsible coexistence with the environment we live, work and travel in. Unfortunately, like many parts of the world, South America is a continent where the indigenous people, the flora and the fauna are under pressures and threats to their accustomed ways of life.

To make sure that Explore Beyond does its part to help sustain existing environments and cultures, we will support social responsibility projects that are involved in economic progress, environmental, educational or health issues. Explore Beyond will support a different charitable project every twelve months and you will be kept up to date with reports and photos through our website. The charities will be qualified and documented according to law.

The first social responsibility project we are going to support is located in Muirapucuzinho – the Amazon of Brazil. Muirapucuzinho is a small community of 45 families. They have been more or less abandoned by the government. The houses they live in are the most primitive imaginable: clay-built walls and a roof of palm leaves.
There is an extremely high unemployment rate because simply, there is no work there. Because of all this, the economic value of this community is practically negligible.

The aim of Explore Beyond is to build a small factory for the production of cassava, as this will increase the economic standing of this community. Cassava is cultivated extensively as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, and is a major source of carbohydrates; the third largest source of carbohydrates for human food in the world.

Through the generated income, we can supply the people who are involved in this project with a basic income. The remaining money will be used for the infrastructure of Muirapucuzinho. Parts of this newly constructed infrastructure will be an organized refuge-dump, a pier for local fisherman (which will be very important for future generations) and also the organized collection of Tucumã, a highly popular widespread kind of palm fruit in that area. Within three months we should be able to build this factory. The main storage shed will be built from masonry and there will be a concrete floor which will be surrounded by a one meter high wall.
The roof will be covered with traditional palm leaves. For the rest, we will supply them with a shredder to process the cassava and an oven with a steel frying-pan. The frying pan will be used to produce the final product.
The final product will be packed in 50kg bags and will be transported and sold in Manaus.

Explore Beyond will invest USD100 of each expedition’s participating client’s sign-up fee in this social responsibility project. After twelve months, we will organize a trip to that specific project location to provide on-the-job assistance so that we can begin with the construction of the factory. There`s also an option to support this social responsibility project without participating in one of our expeditions. The people from Muirapucuzinho will certainly appreciate it if you could make a donation so that they are able to foresee themselves with some of the most basic life support.

The total investment for this project is USD6,000.
